Guardian family Q&A

What is guardianship?

In short, guardianship is when a breeder places their breeding prospects with an approved local family who will love & care for them. Our handpicked & highest quality mastiffs who exhibit the absolute best traits of the breed get to be a part of your family, forever. A contract is in place that allows us to retain breeding rights for a period of time. The guardian family has full ownership of the dog once retired. Guardianship is also a wonderful program because it eliminates the stress for not only the dog but for us as well, our dogs are family. Its extremely difficult for everyone when a dog is rehomed from a family that raised them. The main goal is to ensure that our dogs live long, happy, healthy and fulfilling lives.

Why is a guardian program beneficial?

Guardianship is beneficial to prospective families as well as our breeding program because we firmly believe that all dogs should be given a loving family who they can thrive with. By offering the guardianship program, our breeding dogs get the one on one love & time that they deserve. In order too keep our bloodlines diverse and our kennel not over populated, guardianship is the perfect option. It also gives families the opportunity to add one of our puppies to their pack at a fraction of the price. ($500)

Your dog will receive genetic health testing + X Rays at our expense. We offer a lifetime of support, all breeding related expenses are our responsibility. Guardian families will also receive a $100 incentive for each puppy born as well as the opportunity to name the pups!

What are the requirements to become a guardian family?

-You must own your own home & have no plans to move

-Live within a 1hr radius of Elgin, NB

-Have the confidence & ability to train and socialize your puppy

-Have a fenced yard or acreage

-Have adequate knowledge/experience with the breed

-Must have knowledge about raw feeding or be willing to learn

-Be able to bring your dog back on 24-36hrs of notice

-May not be a guardian home for a different breeder while participating in our program

-Must be willing to cooperate, coordinate and communicate effectively with the breeder

-Provide adequate exercise and mental stimulation for your dog

-Be willing to feed your puppy the breeders diet of choice until retirement

When will a female guardian dog be bred?

To make sure that our dogs are mature in body & in mind before bred, a female will not be bred until her second heat cycle or after. This typically will take place around 18-24 months of age. You will be required to bring her for breeding, she will stay with us for about 5-7 days and return to you for the remainder of her gestation (60 days). She will then return to us a week prior to delivery and remain here with her puppies until they are 8 weeks of age.

Visits are permitted 5 weeks after delivery (to ensure the health of her pups). Video calls are always welcome during the duration of her stay.

Its important that we maintain a relationship prior to breeding to ensure that she is as comfortable as possible when she arrives to whelp.

How long will a male guardian dog be with the breeder?

For males, they will typically only be with us for 3-7 days at most for each breeding.

What if I no longer want my guardian puppy?

We hope that you will only apply with the understanding that dogs are lifetime commitment-unfortunately, life happens and unexpected circumstances may put you in a position where you are no longer able to care for him/her. In cases like that, your puppy/dog must be returned to us immediately and will be placed as advantageously as possible with a new forever family.

What will happen if my dog is not suitable for breeding?

Dogs who do not pass their screening will not be bred in our program.  If this were to ever happen, you will be able to keep your guardian dog- however, spay/neuter will be required at the guardian families expense.
